Chemical Production Engineer

Type: Full-Time

Location: Salt Lake City, UT             

Supervisor: Vice President, Material Science and Applications Development



Checkerspot is looking for a motivated, organized and detail-oriented Chemical Production Engineer to join the Checkerspot Design Lab located in Salt Lake City, Utah. The successful candidate will play a key role in support of  our chemical production group.



  • Ensure batch precision, accuracy, and tracking for formulated urethanes  
  • Manage logistics of raw materials and finished goods by setting up efficient processes to track their usage, timely replacement as well as finished goods production and distribution
  • Develop QC methods to validate batch formulations
  • Coordinate and manage production schedules to ensure timely order fulfillment
  • Identify, acquire, and maintain chemical manufacturing and lab equipment
  • Test, validate, and recommend new biobased alternative formulations
  • Accountable for building a strong safety culture and actively pursue it daily; identify unsafe behaviors and conditions and intervene to mitigate incidents
  • Whenever opportunities arise within and/or across functions, supporting Checkerspot’s stated Public Benefits of promoting environmental stewardship, developing more sustainable materials, and democratizing materials and tools for innovative product development for the betterment of local communities



  • Bachelors’ degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or related fields
  • Experience with weighing/batching chemicals and tracking additions required
  • Must excel at detailed record keeping
  • Chemical safety, handling and storage experience required
  • Strong knowledge of chemistry and lab practices
  • General experience working in a manufacturing environment, mechanical aptitude, and equipment repair skills a plus
  • Comfortable working independently as well as in team settings
  • Detail oriented and capable of managing multiple priorities while meeting expected deadlines
  • Highly motivated and possessing an excellent work ethic
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite of products and Google platform
  • Demonstrated creative problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to function effectively in a fast paced and mission-oriented environment
  • Passionate about preserving the outdoors, sustainability and reducing raw materials inputs in our products
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs with assistance
